Don’t Lose Your Cool – Call The Heat Pump Air Conditioning Parts & Repairs Experts

October 8, 2021
Like any other appliance, heat pumps & air conditioners need a little love & care in order to deliver optimal performance. If your heat pump has been making some odd sounds recently, it isn’t giving you the performance you expect, or has simply stopped working, it’s time to make sure you don’t lose your cool once the weather warms up & get it fixed ready for summer.

What To Check

Heat pumps & air conditioners that haven’t been kept in the best condition tend to struggle the most and drop in performance. If that is happening, there are a few things you can check before calling for a technician.

Is the filter dirty? No matter which type of air conditioner you have, a clogged filter restricts airflow, decreasing efficiency and reducing the ability to effectively cool or heat the air. If you haven’t cleaned the filter in your unit recently, make sure you do & then check it monthly. If the filter is damaged, you will need to replace it.

Is the control on the right setting? Has the controller been switched to the wrong mode? Is it in heating when you want it to be cooling? Is the remote not sending the signal to the unit to adjust the temperature? Perhaps the batteries need replacing.

Have you changed the remote batteries, but the unit still isn’t responding correctly? Try changing the batteries in the remote again, even in a new pack there may be faulty batteries. Your remote control will need the batteries changed periodically when the screen becomes faint or when it becomes less responsive. When you do this, the heat pump will revert to its factory settings and will need to be readjusted. You can avoid this by changing one battery at a time.

Are plants crowding the outdoor unit? The outdoor unit which contains the compressor needs adequate airflow to work correctly, so check there is at least 2 to 3 feet of space between it & any plants or structures. There should also be 5 feet of clearance between the top of the unit & any trees above.

Did you miss your annual maintenance check-up? It is recommended to have your systems checked once a year. An inspection by a qualified technician can catch any serious problems that could leave you hot & bothered in the heat before they get worse. A technician will check all the moving parts as well as any obvious signs of a refrigerant leak, check for component faults or failure & look for any performance issues.

Completed Your Checks & The Heat Pump Is Still Not Working

If you have ensured your filters are clean, your batteries are working, your outdoor unit is free of debris & your system is on the correct setting, but your unit still isn’t working correctly, it’s time to call in some help.

Has Your Heat Pump Started To Make Strange Noises?

If your system has started to make unfamiliar noises, it could be the sign of a part failure.

Banging: Perhaps a component within your heat pump has come loose & is being hit by fan blades or some foreign object like a chunk of ice has made its way into your system or the fan blade itself has become out of alignment. Turn off your system & call the team on 03 366 1823 to arrange a technician to inspect it & if necessary, repair your heat pump in order to protect your fan, motor & other components.

Vibrations & rattling noises: New sounds like rattling & vibrating may indicate a simple problem such as a loose cover panel, which can be easily fixed by tightening some screws. Some rattling noises may be more indicative of a serious problem or an alignment issue, which should be addressed by a technician.

Grinding, buzzing or gurgling: These noises are potential red flags. Malfunctioning contacts or coils can make a buzzing sound. If your system is low on refrigerant, it may make a gurgling sound & need re-charging, but not before a trained technician has located the cause of the leak & repaired it safely & correctly. Your system should never be topped up with refrigerant gas, without the source of the leak first being repaired.

One cause of gurgling can be the units defrost cycle. A heat pump can make a sound like air being exhaled or gurgling when defrosting. When the temperature drops, heat pumps need to perform a ‘defrost cycle’ to remove ice build-up on the outdoor coils and maintain efficiency. This can mean your heat pump will temporarily stop operating or will blow out cooler air. It is important not to turn your unit off whilst the defrost cycle is running. Providing the noise is related to the defrost cycle (which will only happen in cold temperatures), once completed the noise should cease.

Dripping water: It is quite common for water to drip from the outdoor unit in the winter & from the indoor unit drain to the outside in the summer. The amount of water produced is similar to a dehumidifier. If the outdoor unit is leaking an excessive amount of water or the indoor unit is leaking you may have an issue. You could have a condensate failure or a blocked condensate drain. If your unit is leaking inside, take it out of cooling mode and call the team on 03 366 1823 straight away before any water damage is caused to your home.

Why Do I Need A Trained Technician?

A trained technician can investigate the cause of your heat pump noise, failure or lack of performance, as well as being able to carry out an annual inspection, clean & maintenance. They can correctly diagnose the fault, arrange the correct parts & safely replace the part to ensure your system is working to its full capacity as soon as possible. Air conditioning units contain high pressured refrigerant gas & electrical components, it is imperative that the person fitting parts to your system is trained & experienced in doing so. They can also offer advice regarding replacement of your unit if it has sadly seen better days & either can’t be repaired or is no longer cost effective to repair.
