At The Heat Pump People , we believe firmly that the products and services we deliver are of the utmost quality – and believe furthermore that heat pumps in particular are a fantastic solution for residential and commercial premises.
That being said – as with all technologies – there are a few common issues that people have with their heat pump systems you should be aware of.
This may be a problem with the remote control. Try changing the batteries, and if that doesn’t work try another new set of batteries (there are on occasion faulty batteries in packets) to make sure.
It may also be a problem with your units power supply. Make sure to check the main electrical panel and subpanels that supply power to the unit. It could be that the circuit breaker could have been tripped and need to be reset.
Also check the outdoor isolator switch to ensure that hasn’t been switched off accidentally.
The heat pump can make sounds like air being exhaled or a sound of gurgling when it’s in its defrosting cycle. When the temperature drops, heat pumps need to perform this cycle to remove ice build-up on the outdoor coils to maintain efficiency. While it’s in its cycle it will temporarily stop operating or will blow out cooler air – make sure not to turn off your unit while the defrost cycle is in action.
Strange noises, like rattling could indicate that there is a problem with the hardware itself – a component has come loose etc.
Grinding noises may indicate that the fan motor is wearing. The key here is early detection – regular preventative maintenance by our team of experts can save you money and inconvenience in the long run.
The heat pump operates by transferring heat from one place to another. If the air ducts become blocked, then there will an inadequate transfer of heat to where you want it.
A lack of heat production can also be caused by dirt in the air filters, a refrigerant leak, incorrect operating settings, or even the unit being incorrectly sized for the area. Check also that the outdoor unit (which brings the heat in) is not in any way obstructed by vegetation – as this also interferes with its air circulation abilities.
You can check and clean your own filters monthly in your home. Commercial units usually require a technician to carry out a quarterly check as part of a preventative maintenance programme.
In addition, residential units should have a professional service ideally once a year but at the minimum every two years. They can also ensure the unit has been correctly sized for the area. Remember – preventative maintenance is the best strategy for ensuring the longevity and correct functioning of your unit.
